The Conditioned

“Hope
is the heaviest weight
a man can carry
it is the bane of the idealist. “
-The Conditioned.
2012, Sao Paulo, Brazil.

I’ve said it before, I’m not very emotionally expressive. Almost always, my emotions only come out when I am writing. Somehow over the years, I’ve become able to veil my emotions. I’ve become so good at it, that even I don’t know what I feel, when I feel it. But, there are rare occasions, when they do break out. When I do tend to feel, and know exactly what I’am feeling. And watching The Conditioned was one such time, when I did feel. I felt compassion, I felt welled up. I felt goosebumps. I felt a very strong longing to shake Mr. Raimundo Arruda Sobrinho’s hand, and tell him that his poems are simply marvellous.

For a period of around 35 years, Raimundo Arruda Sobrinho was homeless. He always used to stay, and sit in the same spot in Sao Paulo, and write every day. He used to call this place - The Island.

In 2011 Shalla Monteiro made a friend out of him. When she saw Mr. Raimundo for the first time, he gave her one of his poems. Quickly after that she grew impressed by his poetry, and thus wanted to help him with his dream of publishing a book. She went on to create a Facebook page to feature Mr. Raimundo’s works. What happened next is nothing short of a miracle.

Spend five minutes today watching the video embedded below, I guarantee it will be blow your mind away. It will make you feel something. It will inspire you to take that pen up, and start writing!
